If you are like me, you may think that goal-setting should be simple. We decide that we want something, we then create a plan, and then we go get it! Unfortunately, you can probably think of several times when you did exactly that; however, you ended up NOT achieving the goal, right?
I hope that your know that you are not alone! There is actually much more to goal-setting than simply having a great plan. Somehow events do not always adhere to the great plans you make. If you are not careful, you will find that you can easily get distracted by obstacles, fear, and procrastination.
Do you presently have a clear goal in mind? If you do not, please set aside some time to figure out what it is that you really want. Let's just start with one thing for now. Once you have mastered the goal-setting process and you overcome any proclivity to sabotage your efforts , you will then be able to handle several goals. I recommend that you start small for now.
First, your goal should be achievable. The goal should challenge you and still be realistic. Second, your goal should be measurable. You should easily be able to tell if you are making progress or not.
Additionally, you should have a general time frame during which the goal will be achieved. Keep in mind that it is not always possible to control the timing of events, especially when some of them may be out of your hands. The time frame is a guess, at best. However, you should be able to determine a general length of time in which your goal can be achieved.
Just as it is important to clarify what you want to achieve , it is also very important to understand the reasons WHY you want to achieve it. Please think carefully about your WHY. If you do not have concrete reasons for wanting what you want, you will be unable to stay motivated long enough to accomplish it! You will fold under when you reach obstacles.
Write down your goal in as much detail as you can, along with the general time frame in which you want to achieve it. Be sure to add a statement explaining exactly WHY you want to achieve this goal.
Please answer the following five questions with as much detail as possible:
- What is your goal?
- Why is it important for you to achieve this goal?
- How will reaching this goal contribute to your life?
- What gains will you experience when you achieve this goal?
- What do you risk losing if you do not achieve the goal?
This is an important step. Please do not skip it! Answer these questions with as much detail as you can.
